View of the exhibition Eat The Plastic, 2023
Gallery AL/MA
The Eat The Plastic exhibition is a dystopian narrative that imagines the extinction of Homo sapiens and the emergence of a new species, Plasticus Humanimalia. The project takes the form of an inventory of organs (heart, lung, brain, etc.), represented at a 1:1 scale in resin, with visible plastic residues embedded within them. These sculptures are displayed on backlit tables, using old lightboxes from radiology cabinets. Three stained-glass windows depicting the molecules of PVC, polystyrene, and PET complete this imaginary anatomy museum.
Mona Young-eun KIM offers a caustic yet radical solution: humanity, unable to manage an ecologically sustainable recycling system, is forced to feed exclusively on this artificial substance. In the artist’s imagination, this act, consciously carried out, will ultimately lead to the extinction of the human species—not before, however, a desperate attempt at adaptation. Far from ecological injunctions or political moralization, Mona presents a jubilant and absurd fable.
